Do not use any cleaning products until the spilled blood has been removed. Use absorbent pads or paper towels to soak up and wipe down all areas to remove as much blood as possible. Once this is done, pour a disinfectant like bleach over the affected areas and allow to sit for 20 to 30 minutes before scrubbing the area. Place all soiled materials into a garbage bag and tie closed, Any non-disposable items, such as mops, should be soaked in bleach or another disinfectant and allowed to air dry. Remove your PPE and place it in a second garbage bag and then place the garbage bag containing the soiled material into the bag and tie closed. Finally, wash your hands thoroughly using antibacterial soap once you are done.

Carpeted Surfaces

Carpeted surfaces are porous and are harder to clean than non-carpeted surfaces. Here is what you should do once you have donned your personal protective equipment.’

Keep the area where the blood spill occurred to prevent it from spreading to other areas. Spray the area with disinfectant. This will be the first step and you will need to use disinfectant several times because carpeting absorbs fluids. Use an absorbent sponge or towel to soak up fluids. Rince the area and apply more disinfectant and soak up at least three times. (You can also use a steam cleaner to help remove the fluids from the carpets.) If the area is large, you may wish to contact a steam cleaning service to clean your carpets. Finally, ensure that you properly dispose of all cleaning supplies used following the steps listed above.
